Rider's Meeting Preview

There will be a short riders' meeting at 8:45 am Sunday morning.  Some important details which will be dispensed include:

• This is an open course.  Be aware of traffic, including tractor/trailers, on the course, and stay to the right side of the road unless passing another rider.
• Do not follow another rider closer than 80 feet/25 meters
• If passing another rider, stay to the right of the double-yellow line and keep as much distance between you and the other rider as traffic, safety (and the double yellow line) allow.
• Once the race begins at 9:00 am, do not continue to warm up on the course.  The best place to warm up once the race begins is just south of the start on Industrial Road (east-west).
• Know the course!  Maps are available on the blog link and registration.  The course is simple; there are two turns and one turnaround.
• The turn-around is counter-clockwise!

Slight Course Changes/Improvements!

The course this year remains largely unchanged with two exceptions: 1) The START is moved about 150 meters north on New Century Parkway, and 2) The FINISH is moved about 150 meters south on New Century Parkway.  The course length remains 10 kilometers, and both the start and finish will be closer to parking/registration.  This will also give a longer straightaway to the finish.  Both the start and finish will be well-marked, and updated maps will be available to view at registration.  We think this is a slight improvement of the course on many levels!  See the map here or click on the link to the right.  See you Sunday!

When can you ignore this sign?  On May 28th!  There is road work being done at the intersection of 159th Street and Old Kansas City Road, which is east of the course turnaround and does not affect the Blancarte Time Trial Course.  This sign is at the intersection of New Century Parkway and "Industrial Road" or "North Loop Road," depending on which online map/street sign you prefer.  Obviously, use caution on the outbound right turn from New Century Parkway onto North Loop Road to avoid this sign, as well as the left turn from North Loop Road back onto New Century Parkway; staying to the right of the double-yellow line when making your left turn (a USAC rule on an open course) will ensure safety.  As always, this turn will be monitored by a Sheriff's Deputy and a Course Marshall.

10.0K Course Video

Here is a video of the Blancarte TT course.  The start is on New Century Parkway heading north.  At about 2.5 miles there is a right turn onto North Loop Road eastbound.  North Loop Road quickly makes a curve heading southbound into the COUNTER-CLOCKWISE turnaround at 159th St.  The route is then retraced back.  The finish is on southbound New Century Parkway and is just before you reach the registration area at the New Century Fieldhouse.

Other Tidbits (aka In Case You Were Wondering...Part 2)

Remember that the Blancarte 10K Time Trial course is an open course...check back for more course details later.  We are once again fortunate to have the presence and assistance of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office,  a course map is available in the link to the right, a video will soon be posted, and printed maps will be available at registration to view or take with you.

Remember that on an open course you must stay to the right of the yellow line at all times. Also, you must maintain a distance of 25 meters (80 feet) behind the rider ahead of you.  A pass (from 25 meters behind a rider to 25 meters ahead of that rider) should be accomplished within a distance of 500 meters.  Also, you should maintain 2 meters (7 feet) between yourself and another rider when passing.  Of course, riders are very rarely penalized for these infractions unless done willfully and blatantly; on the other hand, 1) we can all compete in the spirit of these rules and 2) you now know a few other pieces of cycling trivia!

In Case You Were Wondering...

"WHAT TIME DO I START?" ...an excellent question!  Although USAC rules specify that a starting list with times "should" be available one hour prior to the start of an Individual Time Trial, we (and others...with the endorsement of our USAC Officials) traditionally have it available 15-20 minutes prior to the first start--or about 8:45 am for the Blancarte Time Trial.  This way, the time between the close of registration (8:30) and the start of the race (9:00) is minimized.
But the primary reason start times can not be pre-determined is explained in three words: Race Day Registration.  The opportunity to register on the day of the race provides convenience for many racers, and that, combined with the continuous starting of riders at 1-minute intervals AND the fact that all riders in each Category and Masters/Juniors Class compete consecutively, makes the determination of start times before the close of registration impossible.  By the way, I doubt that there are many occupational stressors which exceed that of the Registrar and Chief Referee between the time registration closes and the publication of the start list!

The 2017 Jesse Blancarte 10K Time Trial is scheduled for Sunday, May 28th, 2017.  Much has remained the same...the venue is the New Century Air Center in Gardner, Kansas and the first rider will be off at 9:00 am!  Registration opens Tuesday, February 14th here for $25; race day registration costs $35 and is from 7:00-8:30 on May 28th.

Reminders

• Directions: Exit 210 from I-35 (northbound or southbound) onto westbound 175th Street/Highway 56. Proceed through the traffic light and then take the off-ramp (to the right) onto New Century Parkway, then an immediate left and then right into the parking lot of New Century Field House. Check-in and registration will be obvious. 
• Race Day Registration is from 7:00-8:30 am and costs $35. There will be a short racers' meeting at 8:45 for some reminders, any last-minute updates and questions. 
• Your USAC License (or a cell-phone image of it) must be available if you are a race-day registrant (BTW, your bib number will go on the right). 
• First Rider Off at 9:00 am, in 1-minute intervals 
• Remember, this is an Open Course! The turn and turn-around will be controlled, however you very well may experience cars or trucks passing or turning in front of you onto the course. 
• This is a 10.0K Course for the second year. The start is a few feet north of the intersection of New Century Parkway and Old Highway 56/Industrial Bypass. The new portion of the course is on "Industrial Parkway" (Google), or "North Loop" Road (per the street sign). The course remains an out-and-back course. The turn-around will be a counter-clockwise loop around the triangle on North Loop Road, near the hangars. 
• Merckx Class: Alright, you "cannibals:" No TT-specific frames, no bar extensions, no rim depth greater than 36mm, no aero clothing (skinsuits, aero helmets, shoe covers, etc)!

Water Bottles Have Arrived!

Every Junior racer and each Category/Masters winner at the Jesse Blancarte Time Trial will receive a custom Specialized water bottle.  Come on out to Gardner Sunday for your chance to take one home!  Remember that pre-registration via USA Cycling will close at 11:00 p.m. CDT this Friday.  If you choose to register on race day, make sure to allow plenty of time; registration opens at 7:00 a.m.  Check back in a day or two for last-minute reminders.  Everything is falling into place for a great event this Sunday!

Course Video

Here is a video of the full 10.0 K course.  The start line is just off the intersection of New Century Parkway and Industrial Bypass (Old Kansas City Road).  The course proceeds northbound on New Century Parkway.  Remember - there is a RIGHT TURN at about 2.5 miles onto Industrial Parkway/North Loop Road.  The course follows a gradual right turn until you are once again headed southbound.  The turn around is a counter clockwise path around the traffic triangle at North Loop Road and 159th Street.  You will then follow the gradual left curve on North Loop Road, then turn LEFT back onto New Century Parkway at about 4.2 miles.  The finish is on New Century Parkway just before you reach the Registration area.  Enjoy the video!

Full 10.0K Course Map

Last year the course at New Century was expanded to a full 10.0 km.  To accomplish this, northbound racers on New Century Parkway turn RIGHT onto North Loop Road at about 2.5 mi/4 km, follow the curve of North Loop Road back southward and then turn around near the hangars.  Then the route is re-traced in reverse, making a LEFT turn back onto New Century Parkway southbound to the finish.  The 10K finish is reached just before passing the registration area at New Century Field House.  As always, Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies will be assisting our Course Marshals!  Below you'll find a map diagram plus a mapmyride.com link.

2016 Registration Open

Registration for the 2016 Jesse Blancarte Memorial Time Trial is open!  Click here to pre-register via USACycling.org online.  Pre-registration is $25 or $5 for Juniors.  Check back on this site for other updates and information.

2016 Jesse Blancarte Time Trial

The 2016 Jesse Blancarte Time Trial will again take place over Memorial Day weekend, on Sunday, May 29th, 2016.  The course will again be a full 10K course with an additional corner, as was the 2015 edition of the Blancarte TT.  The venue will once again be at the New Century Air Center and Industrial Park in Gardner, Kansas.  Look for continued improvements in the Blancarte Time Trial to satisfy your competitive urge for a short time over Memorial Day weekend!  Registration is set to open in February and will be online via the USA Cycling website.

2015 Results

Congrats to all who braved uncertain conditions and joined us today in Gardner!  We all had low expectations (and I mean low!) for the weather and were pleasantly surprised.
