Merckx Category

Don't have a TT bike or want to worry about bar extensions or other encumbrances? Neither did The Cannibal! Once again, we are offering a Merckx class for those wanting to race against the clock on their road bike. Merckx categories often result in some controversy, but here is the final word regarding the Merckx category at the Jesse Blancarte TT:

1. Frame is UCI legal for mass start races, and sold/marketed as a road bike
2. Maximum rim depth 36mm
3. No aero bars/bar extensions
4. No aero helmets
5. No skinsuits; must have jersey/shirt separate from bibs/shorts, or worn over your skinsuit

Thus, your recent road frame touted as an "aero design" is OK. And that is the "spirit" of the Merckx class: to allow those of us without a TT bike the opportunity to race against others "on an even playing field." As noted on the flyer, if you race in your Masters/Category race plus the Merckx class, you will use a separate race number. As always, wool clothing, leather shoes, toe clips, downtube shifters and Reynolds 531 frame material will earn respect!
